Switzerland 2020 TBA - see below

Due to travel restrictions across Europe due to the coronavirus, this trip, originally scheduled for June 2020, has regretfully had to be postponed.  Currently it is not possible to predict when this visit can be rescheduled - but this revised date will be published here once known.

Updated 15/03/20.

Provisional Details:

Day 1

A full day visit to the International Rhine Regulation Railway (IRR) at Lustenau on the Swiss/Austrian border. This narrow-gauge system once played a part in the regulation of the River Rhine.

Day 2

Visits to both the SBB Depots at Yverdon and Biel/Bienne.

If it isn’t possible to secure visits to both locations, a suitable alternative will be sourced.

Day 3

A trip to the Vapeur Val-de-Travers (VVT) railway which operates from St-Sulpice to Travers and Les Verrieres (close to the French border).

Both steam and historic electric traction should feature during our visit.

An early start for a journey via Realp and Andermatt to Erstfeld.

Here we join the SBB Historic ‘special train’ for a journey to Bodio and Faido (on the Gotthard-South Ramp). A lunch break is scheduled during the stop at Faido, with passengers also able to make connections to/from Bellinzona on regular service trains if preferred.

This train will either be hauled by Ae 6/6 loco 11411 or ‘Krokodil’ Ce 6/8 14253.

Day 4

A morning visit to the famous Swiss Vapeur Parc at Bouveret on the shores of Lake Geneva. Following this, I hope to be able to include an afternoon boat trip on the lake across to Lausanne or Montreux. We return to Brig via the direct SBB train service.

This visit will be based in the town of Brig, with accommodation (rooms have been reserved at both The Europe-Garni Hotel and The Goodnight Hotel) located close to the main SBB/MGB railway stations and just a short walk from the city centre.

It may also be possible to include an extra activity on Wednesday 3rd June, although this is still currently under investigation.
