Travel on the 12 mile East Lancashire Railway behind steam or diesel traction.  Originally opened in 1841 as the Manchester and Leeds Railway, the line was closed for passenger traffic by British Rail in 1972 and reopened in perseveration in 1987.

Cost

A rover ticket on the East Lancs Railway is £24, reduced to £18.50 if booked in advance, but with an additional £2.50 booking fee.

Educational Free Pass

This is an educational visit, so those members with protected (safeguarded) travel facilities can apply for an educational free pass.  Please see: Free Pass for further information.

The free pass ticket should be from your home station to: Manchester Piccadilly (or Manchester Victoria, if applicable)

Rail Tickets for those without an Educational Free Pass or ‘Priv’ Facilities

At the time of writing the cheapest  tickets are as follows on the 08.53 from London Euston and 16.34 from Manchester Piccadilly

• Advance Single London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly £47.50 or £31.35 with an applicable railcard
• Advance Single Manchester Piccadilly £43.50 or £28,70 with an applicable railcard

These are quota-controlled advance tickets - so booking as early as possible is recommended to obtain the ticket at the lowest tier.  Note these tickets must be used on the booked train.

The cheapest ticket on the day, valid on any train for the outward and return journey is an off peak return for £114 or £75.25 with a railcard.
