We were very pleased to welcome you to Westinghouse Signals last Thursday. Herewith is a description of the necessarily brief conducted tour of the two newly refurbished buildings which are central to our operations. The ground floors are dedicated to Manufacturing and System Test as well as Goods-Inwards, Packing and Despatch departments. The upper floors house the principal Production Control and Contracts Engineering offices.

There are several other facilities which time did not permit us to show you - Paint Shops, Plating, Plastics and Metal Forming - but we are glad that you were nonetheless suitably impressed with the range of capabilities, both in manufacture and system design. available here at Chippenham.

Other sister companies here on site include

• - Westinghouse Systems, who provide a wide range of SCADA systems for industrial applications on a worldwide basis
• - Westcode Semiconductors, who manufacture high solid-state devices for electrical switching substations etc. power (50-300a) solid state devices for electrical switching for locomotives, substations etc.
• Westinghouse Brakes, who manufacture all kinds of rail Brake systems, Door operating equipment, Air- conditioning, and a range of specialist train-borne electronics such as Public Address and Passenger Information Displays

The range of Railway and associated technology available here in Chippenham places us in an unique position to provide specialised engineering solutions tailored to the individual needs of our customers.

The Areas demonstrated were as follows:

• PC Card and Automated Test facilities, together with a number of Environmental Test Chambers complete the manufacturing line in this building. Every item manufactured here is subjected to rigorous testing and certification before release to the customer.
• SSI Solid State Interlocking and electronic equipment currently forms the greater part of the manufacturing. SSI module production alone numbers many thousands.
• Relays Westinghouse is the major supplier of signalling safety relays in the UK. This remains a significant quantity product as other manufacturers cut back in the face of the swing to electronic safety systems.
• Electro-mechanical items such as Signals and Point Machines still form an important part of the signalling supply.
• SSI Workstation is an engineering facility which allows the easy preparation of data for the programming of the electronic interlocking systems which currently form a major part of our contracts engineering business.
• R & D The research and development section uses many sophisticated computer tools to assist in the planning, design and testing of new hardware and software. Those being demonstrated include a programme to help in the design of printed circuit boards, and a Train Headway simulator for automatic train control systems.
• TMS Train Management Systems co-ordinate the on-board diagnostic information available from both intelligent and non-intelligent sub-systems such as Doors, Brakes, Lighting, Power, Air-Conditioning, PA, etc., and analyse the data to provide enhanced maintenance, fault-finding and fault prediction capabilities. Current contracts include LUL Central Line and the Channel Tunnel Shuttle trains.
• Central Line Under contracts worth some £70,000,000 Westinghouse Signals are supplying the complete Automatic Train Protection, Automatic Train Operation and Automatic Train Supervision Systems for the London Underground Central Line
