A visit to The Kent & East Sussex Railway  for 10 ½ mile ride through the Rother Valley, on the very first light railway to be constructed

Tickets for the Kent & East Sussex Railway for those with Rail Staff Travel

If you have protected rail staff travel, you can receive 75% discount on the Kent & East Sussex Railway return fare.  The normal return fare from  on the Kent and East Sussex Railway is £27.50.  For those without rail staff travel, it is cheaper to book your Kent & East Sussex Railway ticket in advance at: K&ESRly Timetable & Tickets

Educational Free Pass

This is an educational visit, so those members with protected (safeguarded) travel facilities can apply for an educational free pass.  Please see: Free Pass for further information.

The free pass ticket should be from your home station to Headcorn

Rail Tickets for those without an Educational Free Pass or ‘Priv’ Facilities

An off-peak day return, valid on the above trains is £22.90 or £15.10 with a Railcard (but check specific railcard conditions of use)

Slightly cheaper tickets are possible by using Advance tickets, but as these are limited to specific trains, this maybe too limiting for the return journey.  

Book at South Eastern or any National Rail website.  


DO NOT use thetrainline or other similar third party sites as you will pay more as these sites charge fees which National Rail Train Operator websites do not charge.

At Tenterden there is an opportunity to visit the Railway Museum which includes the history of railway and Colonel Stephens, the entrepreneur who built it.  There is a also a model railway museum and a possibility to get a bite to eat and drink at the station or nearby historic town centre.

The connections below represent the earliest connections upon arrival back at Tenterden, but there are buses approximately every half hour to Headcorn and from there, frequent trains to London.
