Hengist Project Thursday 10th July 2025

The project to built 72010 Hengist British Railways Clan Class steam locomotive, for completion in 2030.

The visit will be to CTL Seal in Sheffield, where the locomotive is being built using 21st Century engineering.

Educational Free Pass

This is an educational visit, so those members with protected (safeguarded) travel facilities can apply for an educational free pass.  Please see: Free Pass for further information.

The free pass ticket should be from your home station to Sheffield.


Train Tickets - for those without free travel facilities


Book travel at East Midlands Railway or any train company website.  DO NOT book at the trainline as you will pay more due to the additional fees that they charge, which train operator websites do not charge.


A National Railcard may well save you 33% of the fare, check at: Railcard.  Additionally, spilt fares maybe significantly cheaper than one ticket, check at: tickets rail forums.  

Meet at outside Sheffield Station entrance at 11.30


Catch a vintage bus to North Weald.  The bus will either a Routemaster (RM) or Regent III (RT) type.


Travel from London

Return Travel

88 bus from Ecclesfield, o/s Green Lane/The Common leave every 10 to 12 minutes.  For a timetable click here: bustimes service 88.  Journey time to Sheffield Centre, adj Arundel Gate/Cs123.  Journey time is approximately 40 minutes.


Return trains to London are as follows: 15.00, arr 17.09, or 15.37 arrive 17.40 or 16.00 arrive 18.10.


Cost:

The project is a charity and there is a recommend a donation on the day of £15 each.

Catch Stagecoach Yorkshire service 88 from bus stop Sheffield Centre Arundel Gate/AG4  which is around 8 minutes walk from Sheffield Station.  Buses at 11.32,  11.44 or 11.56.  This route is normally operated by ADL Enviro400 double deckers.   Alight at stop Ecclesfield, o/s Green Lane/The Common (which is end of the bus route) at either 12.07, 12.20 or 12.33 (depending on which bus is caught) and then it an approximately 4 minute walk to C T L Seal Ltd.


YOU MUST bring your own PPE consisting of Safety Glasses, HV Vest and Safety Shoes as we are going into working steel works.

If you do not have these, these can be cheaply purchased from Screwfix or Tool Station.


There will be a short presentation in their Conference Room,  then visit to the locomotive and then a Q&A session afterwards back in the room.
