TOURS & VISITS

Extracts from our archives accounting the Institutions many varied visits (pre 1980).

The 1936 Educational Tour to Sweden.   After passing through Belgium and Germany (just three years before World War II) and across the Baltic the L&CI enjoyed a varied tour of Sweden, visiting an gas manufacturing factory, the A.S.E.A. Construction Works, a Locomotive Repair works in Huvudverkstaden and the Norhab works, a power station and the SKF works in Goteberg.

The May 1938 visit to Ireland and Scotland.  This must have been quite a week!!  Included on the visit was a tour round G.N.R. (Eire) Dundalk Works, L.M.S. (N.C.C.) York Road Works in Belfast, Harland & Wolff's Ship Building Yards in Belfast, a tour around the Co. Antrim Coast, the North British Locomotive Works in Glasgow, L.N.E.R. Works at Cowlairs, the Empire Exhibition at Glasgow, a Co-operative Wholesale Society's Warehouse (!) and a walk over the Forth Bridge.  If that was not enough, the Locomotive & Carriage Institution was given civic receptions by the Lord Mayor of Belfast and the Lord Provost in Glasgow.  Much of what was visited is now history - an interesting read.
An account of the 1935 visit to Switzerland - this page is still being completed.
