Application for an Educational Free Pass:

For those with protected travel facilities over UK Railway administrations and who are members of the Locomotive & Carriage Institution ONLY.

Agreement has been reached with ATOC on the process for the issuing of free educational passes to Locomotive & Carriage Institution members with protected travel facilities (usually those working for British Rail prior to 1st April 1994) attending educational lectures, seminars and visits. This avoids the need to purchase rail tickets or use a 'box'. This is an adaptation of the arrangement which used to exist under British Rail.

Note: Only those events shown as "free pass" on the events calendar page of this website and/or are clearly shown as being eligible for a free pass on other official Institution printed publications, such as the newsletter, are eligible for use of this facility.

The pass must not be used for any other purpose, including Instruction events not shown as being eligible for a free pass.

To apply for a free pass, either use the application form in your Locomotive & Carriage Institution Newsletter, or click the button on the right or at the bottom of this page to fill in the electronic application form. You must sign the form.

Note that you must order your pass for 'reasonable' dates to attend the Locomotive & Carriage Institution event only - so travel on the day, or if it is long way from home, dated for the day before and the day after the event is reasonable, but returning a week later is not.

Then, follow these guidance notes:

Apply at least 14 days in advance of the pass being required.

Enclose a photocopy / printout of the relevant newsletter / syllabus card / web page / agenda letter, detailing the lecture / visit / seminar you wish to have a free pass to. This must accompany all applications for free passes.

Also enclose a photocopy of your current valid membership card. Note: this only needs to be sent on the first instance your are applying for a free educational pass per membership year as it will be then kept on file.
