THE LOCOMOTIVE & CARRIAGE INSTITUTION HISTORY:

Extract from 1990 Annual Report:

"In its 80 years existence the Institution has, as is only to be expected, had its ups and downs, but it has survived two world wars, grouping and nationalisation with an unbroken history.  Originally formed by and for Locomotive Inspectors and Forman; it soon became open to a wider membership, but it has always maintained a distinctly "traction" character.

We have had a succession of distinguished presidents, which between the wars included eminent engineers, among them Sir Nigel Gresley, R.E.L. Mansell and Sir Henry Fowler.  The peak membership figures seems been reached in the 1950's when some 350 were on the roll", (since then peaked at just over 500 prior to privatisation in the mid 1990s).

"The programme of meetings and visits is wide-ranging, informative and entertaining as ever it has been in the past.  The Locomotive & Carriage Institution continues to occupy a unique niche in the professional railway scene and extends an invitation to all to find out more about its blend of practical, yet informal activities".

This section charts the Institutions history prior to 1980 (more recent events are under the relevant headings above).

Included on this suite of pages are lists of past presidents, extracts from the 1936, 1940, 1952 and 1992 Annual Reports / Year Books and accounts of some of the Institution's tours and visits overseas. Also now included our images of early memorabilia.

Finally, there is a history of the Locomotive named after the Institution, 47 584
